Deputy Yvan Rogers
San Diego County Sheriff’s Department

After an incident during a patrol call touched a little too close to home, Deputy Yvan Rogers decided to take his standard CPR refresher courses more seriously.

Just back to work after being on paternity leave for the birth of his first daughter, Deputy Rogers and his partner got a radio call while patrolling in Encinitas. Responding to the call, they found a 2-year-old boy headfirst in a 5-gallon bucket of water. As his partner immediately began CPR on the boy, Deputy Rogers couldn’t shake the image of his newborn daughter lying there in place of the child.

It was a life-changing incident that taught him the value of being prepared, and with a renewed commitment to safety Deputy Rogers began giving lectures and presentations to children, teens and adults in an effort to get others prepared for any kind of emergency.

As a father of five young children, Deputy Rogers says he has learned how easy it is to be prepared for his own kids and hopes others will do the same.

“The fear of the unknown should be enough for people to realize the importance of being prepared,” he says.
