Rob and Mary Zimmer
Imperial Valley prepared pet owners
Rob and Mary Zimmer met as the result of the 2003 San Diego wildfires. Rob was one of the many friendly “Valleyites” who opened their homes to San Diegans in need of a place to stay during the disaster. Desperate to keep her horses and pets out of the harmful air conditions, Mary answered Rob’s ad and took a leap of faith in trusting him. She evacuated to Rob's home after being without power – or a shower -- for more than 10 days. They met and fell in love -- and now they're happily married!
Having gone through that experience together, the Zimmers vowed to never again be in a situation that would challenge their safety. As parents, they share the message of preparedness with their children. As business owners, they do their part to ensure that their community knows about the Red Cross and the importance of being "Red Cross Ready."
And as animal lovers, they include their pets in their plan. They ensure that their pets are all kept current in their vaccinations and have carrying crates, extra blankets, water and food for all the animals, some of which have physical challenges. They also keep medical/veterinarian records and emergency vet numbers on hand and have a gated “safe area” designated for their pets for when they are not home. Even the fish tank has a backup pump in the event of a power outage.
“Today we are true believers that a healthy dialogue that includes safety and preparedness are part of the plan,” the Zimmers say.
