Jim Madaffer

Former San Diego City Councilmember

”The more prepared the public is for a disaster, the safer everyone will be,” Madaffer says.

Madaffer is prepared both at home and in his vehicle. In a designated area in the garage, Madaffer keeps several weeks of supplies ready for the family in case of an emergency. In his car, he keeps a first-aid kit, clothes, hats, water, food, hand-cranked radios and even an automated external defibrillator (AED), which can be used in cases of cardiac emergency. He has kept his home and vehicles prepared with kits and other disaster supplies for more than 25 years.

Madaffer, who was council president, spread the important message of preparedness as an elected official through press conferences, by introducing resolutions, sending out eNews articles and being highly involved in creating the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) program in San Diego. Most recently, he has helped in the start of San Diego Project Heart Beat, the regional public access defibrillation program.
Former Council President Jim Madaffer knows the importance of being prepared and has made it a priority in his life.   His interest in preparedness began as a child with his involvement in the Boy Scouts.  Jim later completed disaster training at the Red Cross, and has since believed that everyone should be prepared and aware. Jim says, ”The more prepared the public is for a disaster, the safer everyone will be.”
