Don Boccio
Earth science teacher, Mira Mesa High School

Don Boccio learned the importance of preparedness firsthand after experiencing several large-scale disasters. And as an Earth science teacher at Mira Mesa High School, he understands the responsibility he has for the safety of his students.

After living through the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and the Sept. 11 attack as a teacher in New York, and the 2003 and 2007 wildfires here in San Diego, Boccio felt the need to become more knowledgeable about emergency preparedness.

His goal is to continue to spread preparedness as he restarts the Red Cross Club at Mira Mesa High School. He already has made a huge change to the school’s earthquake drill and plans to modify the curriculum of Earth science to include lessons on earthquake and terror attack preparedness. As the representative of the San Diego Unified District’s Earth science “course alike” group, Don plans to present to the members of the group and encourage them to include preparedness lessons as part of the district’s curriculum.

Boccio believes that all citizens should prepare for various emergencies that will enhance the second responder’s ability to serve the needs of citizens affected by the emergency.
